Year 5

The sky is the limit in Year 5 as the students launch into a unit on the Solar System. The workings and wonders of the planets from Mercury to Neptune will be visited with a

multitude of resources from books and videos to real astronomical experiences in the STARLAB incursion. This unit is integrated with our English program and Christian Studies units, which look at how to write stories about space travel and the story of the Bible. In History, the focus is a little closer to home with an in-depth study of colonial Australia learning about the first settlers and convicts, the frontier resistance and colonial development. Students delve into the experiences of different people and the varied perspectives developed over time.

Once the astronauts return, the focus turns to the incredible diversity found in living things all over the earth. The Adaptations in Nature unit discusses the differences between Creation and Evolution and the students enjoy designing and building their own creatures which have many weird and wacky adaptations of their own. An excursion to the Gold Rush town is the highlight of the ‘Heroes and Villains’ History unit which provides a rich context for the many creative arguments and discussion points put forward by the students as they learn how to construct a persuasive text.

This wonderfully rich history unit leads seamlessly into Unit 3 Science which also uncovers the mysteries of light, colours, reflection and shadows, with the Light unit. Students will build their own periscope, split light into all the colours of the spectrum. They will also complete a unit on ‘Responding to God’s Call’ in Christian Studies. The Year 5 camp will be a highlight of this unit.

There’s no time to relax yet as Unit 4 is just as action packed as the rest of the year. Science finds the students investigating the changing forms of materials in the Solids, Liquids & Gases Unit. ‘Hands on’ is the mode of operation here with experiments and demonstrations that make science come alive. In Geography, they will examine the climate and landforms of Australia and how this affects its citizens through natural disasters, such as bushfires.

Year 5 at Citipointe Christian College is an adventure with wonderful support as the students challenge themselves weekly with new content and skills. From the first lift off to the final bell, Year 5 students will have a blast!
