Year 6

Year 6 is a year filled with variety, leadership and challenge.

It is a fantastic year of in depth investigation into the world around us which begins in Term 1 with a close-up look at the history of Australia’s federation and the people who played a part in it. Students also have the opportunity to get their hands dirty as they complete experiments that help them understand photosynthesis and environmental influences on living things. In Week 9 of Term 1, the students head to Mapleton Holiday Centre for an adventurous three-day camp with a focus on fun, teamwork and leadership.

As the seniors of the primary school, Year 6 students are selected during Term 1 to apply for a range of Primary Leadership roles in various areas including outreach, weekly assemblies, sports and music.  Through a variety of activities, students develop their skills at organising, leading and serving others in the school community.

Circuits, generators and energy excite the students in Science for Term 2 as they study electricity and how it is created. Students use hands-on activities to explore how circuits work and design their own switch. Their investigations into Australian history also continue as they examine images of significant historical events to learn about where we have been as a nation and where we are today.

Unit 3 starts off with a bang as the Year 6 students have the opportunity to attend a “Big Bang” Science incursion. The entire student cohort attends an exciting introductory presentation after which each class participates in an hour-long workshop with hands on activities demonstrating chemical and physical change.

After a great mid-year break, “Global Connections” forms the focus of the Geography unit for all of Semester 2 and provides many opportunities for students to investigate the countries around the globe that Australia has links with. The students enjoy learning about the world around them and how our actions and interactions impact on others around the globe and in our own neighbourhood. Stories from people who have crossed the globe to live in Australia enrich the students’ learning experiences. This unit culminates with a wonderful day of celebrating some of the cultures that have had a huge effect on our society and traditions. Colourful costumes abound and the stalls which the students put together are filled with flavoursome foods and creative displays.

The Science investigations for the year culminate with a unit on “Natural Disasters” in which we focus on earthquakes and how they impact landscapes and communities around the world. The students are encouraged to develop evacuation plans for their families and to look at how governments and communities can best prepare for emergency situations.

Throughout the year, our Christian Studies lessons will focus on the idea of Leadership. Students are encouraged to take responsibility for the talents that The Almighty has bestowed upon them. These talents have been given in order to change lives, promote spiritual wellbeing and to right social injustices.
